How to Winterise Your Log Cabin in Ireland
Ireland’s winters are mild by European standards, but they are consistently wet, windy, and cold from October through to March. A log cabin that hasn’t been properly prepared will feel cold, damp, and expensive to heat. One that has been properly winterised will be warm, dry, and cheap to run.
This guide covers everything you need to do to get your log cabin ready for winter in Ireland, whether you use it as a garden office, a glamping rental, or a permanent home.
Why Winterising Matters for Log Cabins in Ireland
Timber is a natural material. It expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, which means gaps can appear between logs over time. Ireland’s high rainfall and Atlantic humidity make this especially important.
A log cabin that isn’t winterised properly will suffer from:
- Cold draughts through gaps in wall logs or around frames
- Rising damp from an uninsulated floor
- Heat loss through an uninsulated roof
- Timber decay if external surfaces aren’t treated regularly
- Condensation on cold internal surfaces
Step 1: Inspect and Treat the External Timber
This is the most important annual maintenance task. External timber should be treated with a quality wood stain or preservative every 2–3 years as a minimum. If your cabin is exposed to the west, treat it every year on that face.
Do this in September or early October before the worst of the wet season arrives.
Step 2: Seal Gaps and Draught-Proof
As timber settles, gaps can open up. These are the biggest source of heat loss in an older cabin. Use a timber-compatible flexible sealant for gaps between logs. Standard silicone can crack as the timber moves.
Step 3: Insulate the Floor
Cold rises from the ground. An uninsulated timber floor is one of the most common reasons a log cabin feels cold in winter.
- Rigid insulation board (PIR): Most effective, typically 50–100mm thick.
- Insulated floor overlay: A layer of rigid insulation topped with plywood.
Step 4: Insulate the Roof
Heat rises. For a garden office or occasional-use cabin, basic roof insulation is sufficient. For a residential or year-round cabin, proper roof insulation is essential.
Step 5: Check Windows and Doors
All TimberLodge365 cabins come with double-glazed wooden windows and doors as standard. However, check that all windows close fully and hinges are tight. Consider thermal curtains for large window areas.
Step 6: Service Your Heating System
Whatever heating system you use, service it before winter, not during it. Have your chimney swept if you use a wood-burning stove and test all electric panel heaters.
Step 7: Improve Ventilation to Prevent Condensation
A sealed, poorly ventilated cabin in winter will develop condensation. Over time this leads to mould growth.
- Ensure trickle vents in windows are open.
- Use a dehumidifier if the cabin is used occasionally.
- Maintain a low level of background heating (5–7°C) when unoccupied.
